Show Your Work! – A New way of Operating

This book came my way after watching Ali Abdaal’s video How writing online made me a millionaire. Austin Kleon’s book Show Your Work! is a great book and an enjoyable read. This book’s aim is to give the reader a way of getting noticed and gain an audience all the while doing what you do best. Ultimately a different way to self-promotion.

I had originally planned to make this as one post, which I struggled getting everything I wanted in. So, with some advice and a well timed post form K E Garland, I’m making this into a short series. I hope you enjoy.

Journal: Struggling to write this!

Currently I have been working on writing my review post on Austin Kleon’s book Show Your Work!. I have got something written so far, but I feel that it really does undersell the book and is very rubbish for my own standards.

It has also been stressing me out and giving me block to write anything else right now.
I feel like the best way to do this might be to delete everything that I do have so far, all notes and thoughts and start fresh. Maybe split the article up into a series instead as I feel I have a lot of thoughts on each section and chapter of his book.

To those experienced bloggers out there, how do you cope in this situation? When a post might be a bigger project than you thought it would be? Please comment below because I could do with some help.

Apples WWDC has been announced!

I am an Apple fan boy, even if my tech is mostly dated! I do look forward to their events each time to see where the next generation of Apple gadgets and OSs are going.

This year is going to see iOS 16, it is going to be interesting to see what they are going to change and add to all the OS’s and what developers are going to bring with it.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference returns in its all-online format

Apple to again host Swift Student Challenge

Cupertino, California Apple today announced it will host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in an online format from June 6 through 10, free for all developers to attend. Building on the success of the past two years of virtual events, WWDC22 will showcase the latest innovations in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, while giving developers access to Apple engineers and technologies to learn how to create groundbreaking apps and interactive experiences.

“At its heart, WWDC has always been a forum to create connection and build community,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise and Education Marketing. “In that spirit, WWDC22 invites developers from around the world to come together to explore how to bring their best ideas to life and push the envelope of what’s possible. We love connecting with our developers, and we hope all of our participants come away feeling energised by their experience.”

Now more than ever, Apple products are part of users’ daily lives, helping them to learn, create, and connect. At WWDC22, Apple’s growing global community of more than 30 million developers will gain insight and access to the technologies and tools to bring their visions into reality. In addition to the announcements shared from the keynote and State of the Union presentations, this year’s program will also include more information sessions, more cutting-edge learning labs, more digital lounges to engage with attendees, and more localised content to make WWDC22 a truly global event.

In addition to the online conference, Apple will host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together, along with the online community. Space will be limited, and details about how to apply to attend will be provided on the Apple Developer site and app soon.

For the third year, Apple will also support students who love to code with the Swift Student Challenge. Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary app for iPad and Mac that makes learning the Swift programming language interactive and fun. For this year’s challenge, students from around the world are invited to create a Swift Playgrounds app project on a topic of their choice, and they can submit their work through April 25. New thought and ideas

While righting notes on the book Show Your Work by Austin Kleon I can to realise two things:

  • First, although I like using Twitter and it is now the only social media I really use (do you count Pinterest?), Twitter is limited in what I can totally share on it.
    I want to talk more and add more to the process and background things I am working on.
  • Second, on the topic of talking more, I have been waiting to keep this website for the main blog posts that I write. This means that pretty much once a month I would be posting. However there is things that I still want to post outside of the blog posts.

So, solution, the main blog posts I will now refer to as Articles, as it seems more fitting. I have also started a “sub” blog called Journal.

Articles

The articles are going to be the end product of research, time and learning. They are going to be something that hopefully you will find worth reading and also learn something from.

Journal

The journal is going to be full of links, ideas, thoughts. It will also be full of the process that leads me to a finished article, all the research, notes, thoughts and writing process.

Another way to put it, the process to the art and not the product of the art.

There is just so much I would like to share online, so much more to me that I would like to express and show the world.

I hope you all like this new format, please leave a comment on your thoughts or even advice, I would love to hear from you.

Adventure Day: Melincwrt Waterfalls

Today I had some time to spend with my sister. It has been a while since we had a good catch up. We wasn’t sure where should go that was a few hours worth but also not too long for doing the school run.

So, Melincwrt Falls was chosen.

These coordinates are rough areas.

Parking: 51.704134, -3.706674

Starting Point: 51.704131, -3.706143

About the Location

have been here several times now and enjoyed each time. I wrote about the last time I went there here:

Adventure Day: Melincwrt Waterfall

As before, there is plenty of parking at the bottom. You are usually luck to see a car or two there. The start of the track is just on the other side of the road.

The water was fast flowing today.

Heading up to the waterfall without distraction should take about 15-25 minutes with a slight gradient. I think it took us over half hour taking photos and enjoying the sights along the way.

There is plenty of spots that you can see the river down the left side of the track.

A little way down from the waterfall there is steps on the right, these head over the top of the waterfall and gives access to the fairy forest beyond.

The best time to see the waterfall is just after a few days of rain, even better if you time it half hour after the rains… or I guess as it is raining.

The fairy forest is above the waterfall and is near the church that is there. Although I would ask all to be considerate that this part is not a beaten path and is old and natural woods.

What happened?

After looking at a small clearing near the. car park that was not there before, we headed on to the trail.

The sun was a bit weird today, lazy and bright. 

Winter still has it’s grips on the forest but there was plenty of signs of spring coming and not just from the Daffodils flowering. Other plants were poking through the dead leaves, and the trees had buds on ready.

At the waterfall I found a random pair of sunglasses left there. How did someone forget them?

After seeing the waterfall we headed back down the trail to the steps that head up and over the top. On the way up I found a random tag with a face on it and one blackbird egg in the branches of a fallen tree. Tried looking for more or even a nest.

Somehow someone left these on one of the large boulders, nice glasses though.

Following the stream further up into what I say is a Fairy forest, a mostly untouched part of the trail and woods, that just looks old and wild. Although it didn’t strike the majestic beauty that I have seen it in the spring and autumn time it was still a wondrous place to go. We spent probably close to an hour exploring the area including a rest for 10 minutes.

They walk back down went quickly, it always seems to somehow. 

Afterwords

In all it has been an enjoyable day and a good catch up with my sister. I can’t wait for my next adventure day!

As part of Show Your Work! – Austin Kleon who wrote a fantastic book that can be easily summed up to it’s title, show your work. I am now planning to write a weekly update post, a newsletter in a way, on things that I have worked on in the last week, things that I have done and what I plan for the week ahead. I am hoping this makes me feel more accountable and get me to write more blog post and get more productive work done.
